Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction? Spiritual Direction is sometimes referred to as spiritual companioning. This is a space and a place to talk about your thoughts, feelings, fears, questions, experiences related to your understanding of the divine. A spiritual director or companion uses a variety of activities and/or questioning techniques to engage the participant in exploring the process. It is highly personal.

What it is not…
It is not religion.
It is not dogmatic.
It is not therapy.
It is not teaching.

Short history of it….Spiritual direction has been around for hundreds of years. It started in the traditions of the big 3 religions and has grown in all faith traditions as well as for folks that don’t follow any formal religious path.

Why might someone participate in it?
If you are interested in exploring your personal relationship with the divine, want to explore spiritual practices, wish for a place to have someone deeply listen to your ideas about your spirituality, and need a place to voice your questions about the bigger picture–then spiritual direction may be for you.

Folks who call themselves a spiritual director become certified to become spiritual directors. Not anyone can just call themselves a spiritual director. The Spiritual Directors Network is a great resource to learn more and connect with a professional spiritual director.

It is recommended that you choose a person from the list contained on SDI; these are people that hold themselves accountable to a supervisor, and community and follow universal ethical principles, with the most important one being to “do no harm.”

Why choose Till the Soil Spiritual Direction?

My door is open to all. I am personally drawn to these spiritual traditions and/or orientations: Unitarian Universalist, Buddhism, Christianity, Eco/Nature-based, Interfaith, Interspiritual, Spiritual but Not Religious, and Spiritual Independent.

I can work with adults of all ages and youth; I am available to groups such as families who would like to bring spirituality to their homes, activist groups, folks who serve their congregations as board members or through committee work, or people who serve their communities in volunteer capacities.

I recognize that there is a stigma for many around using god-centered language, and I can offer a space where you can explore your relationship with the divine without pressure or exclusion. My work is about bringing what is beneath the surface into the light so something new can grow. I can assist you in growing the language and practices that you are comfortable with to your life.
